The Fifth Zhabdrung Karpo, Khetsun Gyatso (zhabs drung 05 mkhas btsun rgya mtsho), was born in Ngulra (dngul rwa) in the Machu (rma chu) region of Golok, Amdo, 1797. He was recognized as the reincarnation of the Fouth Zhabdrung Karpo, Lobzang Tubten Gelek Gyeltsen (zhabs drung dkar po 04 blo bzang thub bstan dge legs rgyal mtshan), by the Seventh Paṇchen Lama, Pelden Tenpai Nyima (paN chen bla ma dpal ldan bstan pai nyi ma, 1781-1854), who was his main teacher. At age sixteen he traveled to U-Tsang.
He played the role of a peace-maker in the south of the Yellow River. It seems that he stopped raids into the Dazhi (mda' bzhi) region, now Haiyan county, which was under his administration, by the Mongol people of Rebkong.
He passed away in 1831, at age thirty-five.
