Jangtang Repa (byang thang ras pa) was one of the "Eight Repa" (ras pa), a group of disciples of Jikten Gonpo Rinchen Pel ('jig rten mgon po rin chen dpal, 1143-1217), the founder of Drigung Til Monastery ('bri gung mthil). He spent time in Tsari (tsa ri), Gampo (sgam po) and Lhodrak (lho brag) where he was said to have five hundred yogi disciples.
Although not much is known about the life of Jangtang Repa, we can assume that he was an accomplished practitioner from the following piece of evidence. On one occasion, the fourth throne holder of the Drigung lineage, Chennga Drakpa Jungne (spyan snga grags pa 'byung gnas, 1175-1255), sent him the following prayer below along with a gift of high-quality salt:
Om Swasti
To the Precious One—
Son of the guru, our father Jikten Gonpo,
Nephew of our forefather, Noble Pakmodrupa,
You who are undoubtedly unequalled—
Jangtang Rechen,
I offer ten ounces of the finest salt.
By this merit, like a pure moon,
May I attain full enlightenment.
