TERMS OF USE
The Treasury of Lives (hereafter, "TOL") is an open-access biographical encyclopedic database produced by a collaborative community of scholars in conjunction with Treasury staff. Treasury of Lives place entries are regularly updated and Treasury of Lives person entries are updated on an as-needed basis. In order to preserve the integrity of The Treasury, distribution rights of selected content are limited.

General User Rights. The Board of Directors of The Treasury of Lives grants each individual user a royalty-free non-exclusive limited license to read, download, make copies, print, search, or link to the full text of each TOL entry, crawl each entry for indexing (subject to reasonable network usage constraints), and distribute each entry only as permitted below provided that the purpose of the distribution is non-commercial.

Subscribing User Rights. The Board of Directors of The Treasury of Lives grants each individual user from a subscribing institution ("Subscribing User") a royalty-free non-exclusive limited license to read, download, make copies, print, search, or link to the full text of each TOL entry, crawl each entry for indexing (subject to reasonable network usage constraints), and distribute each entry only as permitted below provided that the purpose of the distribution is non-commercial; as well as the non-exclusive license to read, download, make copies, print, adapt and otherwise use, with attribution, The Treasury classroom resources including the sample syllabi, lesson plans, bibliographies and data exports.

Course Reader Policy. All Treasury material, including Treasury people entries and Treasury place entries, can be republished in course readers with proper attribution. Treasury Classroom Resources, including sample syllabi, lesson plans, bibliographies, data exports and customized maps, can be republished in course readers with proper attribution after consultation with Treasury staff.

Limited Electronic Distribution Rights

A General or Subscribing User (hereafter, "User") may electronically distribute a Treasury of Lives entry to computers and mobile devices that are owned and controlled by the User.

A User may electronically distribute a Treasury of Lives entry to others only for private electronic correspondence. This includes communications between the User and an individual, and communications, postings or file-sharing to closed, invitation-only groups of individuals.

A User may electronically distribute a link to a Treasury of Lives entry.

Linked Sites. Our Site may contain certain links to third parties' websites ("Linked Sites"). Linked Sites are not controlled, or examined by TOL in any way and TOL is not responsible for the content, availability, advertising, products, or other materials of any such Linked Sites, or any additional links contained therein. It is the User's sole responsibility to comply with the appropriate terms of service of the Linked Sites as well as with any other obligation under intellectual property, defamation, decency, privacy, security, and export laws related to the use of such Linked Sites and any content contained thereon. In no event shall Treasury of Lives be liable, directly or indirectly, to anyone for any loss or damage arising from or occasioned by the creation or use of the Linked Sites or the information or material accessed through these Linked Sites. You should direct any concerns relating to such third party site to that site's administrator or webmaster. TOL reserves the exclusive right, at its sole discretion, to add, change, decline, or remove, without notice, any feature or link to any Linked Sites from Our Site.

Intellectual Property Rights. Narrative biographies are the property of Treasury of Lives and/or its contributing authors. Metadata used to categorize data discoverability internally and externally is licensed using CC0 (Creative Commons Open License) that permits full reuse on external platforms, including use on Linked Open Data applications. Images used on The Treasury of Lives that are offered by permission of the owner are protected by copyright and may be covered by other restrictions as well. Images used from open source repositories are credited to their host institution. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that reuse of an image from The Treasury of Lives has appropriate permissions.

Subscriber Rights. The Treasury of Lives offers annual subscriptions to institutions at three levels. Subscribers are free to cancel their service at anytime and receive a refund for the term unused, subject to an administrative fee. Subscribers and their individual members (Subscribing Users) are subject to the same terms and conditions as General Users of the Treasury of Lives.
In order to comply with regulations that vary across the world, we may revise these Terms of Use at any time and without notice by posting a revised version on this website. Checking back periodically will mean you are aware of any changes. You are bound by any such revisions and it is recommended to visit this page to review the current Terms and Conditions.
