Amchok Tsenyi, an important Geluk monastery located in southeastern Ngawa, Amdo, was founded in 1823. The people in the region were Bon practitioners until the eighteenth century when a Ganden-educated monk by the name of Sonam Chopel began to convert people to Buddhism. His reincarnations are known as the Amchok Rinpoche, and are based at the monastery.
