Amchok Tsenyi, an important Geluk monastery located in southeastern Ngawa, Amdo, was founded in 1823 (there is a different Amchok Gon in Gansu), was founded in 1823. The people in the region were Bon practitioners until the eighteenth century when a Ganden educated monk by the name of Sonam Chopel began to convert people to Buddhism.
