Lobpon Galeb (slob dpon sga leb) was born in a village called Seleb (se leb) in Pasho (dpa' shod), Kham. Together with Takleb Jangchub Gyeltsen (stag leb byang chub rgyal tshan, d.u.) he joined Japuk Dongak Dargye Ling (bya phug mdo sngags dar rgyas gling), presumably a Kadam monastery in Lhorong (lhor rong), Kham.
Together they travelled westward to study with Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (tsong kha pa blo bzang grags pa, 1357-1419) and Jamyang Choje Tashi Pelden ('jam dbyangs chos rje bkra shis dpal ldan, 1379-1449), the founder of Drepung Monastery ('bras spungs dgon). It is likely that they also studied with Drakpa Rinchen (grags pa rin chen, d.u.), the founder of Gomang College (sgo mang grwa tshang).
According to legend, both Geleb and Takleb cut a branch from two separate juniper trees to use as walking sticks on their journey to Lhasa. They planted these near the Gungru Khangtsen (gung ru khang tshan) at Drepung, which later grew into giant juniper trees that survived until 1959. The legend of the trees were such that the trees from which the cuttings came were given special status at Japuk Dongak Dargye Ling.
At some point he was appointed to the abbacy of Gomang, the second man to hold the office. His length of service is not known.
