The Treasury of Lives

The Fourth Nyitrul, Jigme Choying Dorje (nyi sprul 04 'jigs med chos dbyings rdo rje) was born in the first quarter of nineteenth century, possibly around 1819. His father, Dorje Gyelpo (rdo rje rgyal po) who was better known as Orgyen Drodul Lingpa (o rgyan 'gro 'dul gling pa) was a prominent treasure revealer widely known by “Dakpo Terchen” meaning Great Treasure Revealer of Dakpo.

According to hagiographies, the young boy narrated the life stories of the Third Nyitrul to his parents as soon as he was able to speak. At this young age he was identified by the Fourth Dzogchen Mingyur Namkhai Dorje (rdzogs chen 04 mi 'gyur nam mkha'i rdo rje, 1793-1870) as the reincarnation of his teacher, the Third Nyitrul Mingyur Pende Gyatso (nyi sprul 03 mi 'gyur phan bde rgya mtsho, 1772-1817).

He was brought to his seat monasteries, first to Chakri Nyidrak Monastery (chags ri nyi grags dgon) which is also known as Singdzong Osel Drubde (sring rdzong 'od gsal sgrub sde), and then to Takmogang Kelzang Puntsok Ling (stag mo sgang skal bzang phun tshogs gling), both founded by Terchen Rigdzin Nyima Drakpa (gter chen rig 'dzin nyi ma grags pa, 1647-1710), the first incarnation of the line. He was received with an elaborate traditional welcome by the lamas and monks accompanied by flocks of local devotees, and enthroned to the seat of the monastery. Subsequently he was taken on a tour of the other affiliated monasteries in the tradition of his lineage.

Later he settled at his seat monastery where he studied under a number of teachers. He also studied at Dzogchen Monastery with the Fourth Dzogchen Drubwang and became a noted teacher and competent lineage holder. He later served the monasteries in both education and administration roles,  prioritizing his role as a teacher.

Tsewang Pelgyi Dorje, the Second Troshul (khro shul dge sprul 02 tshe dbang dpal gyi rdo rje, d.u.) and Troshul Getse Tulku Beme Zhidrol (khro shul dge rtse sprul sku 'bad med gzhi grol, b. c.1867) were his main disciples.

Jigme Choying Dorje is credited with a volume of teachings, although nothing appears to be extant.

No further details of his life are available currently.

Tendzin Trinle Wangchuk (bstan 'dzin phrin las dbang phyug, d.u.) born in a royal lineage of Tibet, was recognized as his reincarnation.

Samten Chhosphel earned his PhD from CIHTS in India where he served as the head of Publication Dept. for 26 years. He has a Master’s degree in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College, Boston. Currently he is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the City University of New York, and Language Associate in Columbia University, NY.
