The Treasury of Lives

Tsokye Dorje (rgyal dbang mtsho skyes rdo rje) was born in 1530, and became a monk at Riwoche Monastery in Kham. He received the transmission of the Taklung tradition from the sixteenth throne holder of Taklung Monastery, Kunga Tashi (stag lung khri 16 kun dga' bkra shis, 1536-1599/1605), who had come to Riwoche. He also served as a teacher to the seventeenth Taklung throne holder, Ngawang Namgyel (stag lung khri 17 ngag dbang rnam rgyal, 1571-1626), who was the author of an important history of Taklung Kagyu, the Chojung Ngotsar Gyatso (chos 'byung ngo mtshar rgya mtsho).

He is considered to have been the First Riwoche Jedrung (ri bo che rje drung), but nothing more is known about him.

Alexander Gardner is Director and Chief Editor of the Treasury of Lives. He completed his PhD in Buddhist Studies at the University of Michigan in 2007. He is the author of The Life of Jamgon Kongtrul The Great.
