Wonto Monastery, originally a Bon and Nyingma institution, was converted to the Sakya tradition in the thirteenth century during the visit of  Chogyel Pakpa. It was expanded during the reign of the Derge king Jampa Puntsok. It was heavily damaged in the nineteenth century during the invasion of Derge by Gonpo Namgyel.
