The clan name Welshul comes from the nomadic area Welshul in Amdo. Traditionally, the Welshul clan acted as important leaders in nomadic communities comprised of multiple clans. A Welshul Ponchen (dpon chen), the most powerful leader in the community, would be responsible for handling land disputes, theft etc.
