The Dhogon Palace was located in Nyemo. Before its destruction in about 1967, the building was home to the aristocratic Dhogon family, also known as Gonpawa, which is descended from the Yarlung kings, and had ruled the region for centuries. The fortress-like building was built into the rock beneath it, enabling it to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes. It contained many ornate details, as well as library with a wooden door scarred by Dzungar Mongol swords in the early 1700's. It was the childhood home of scholar and artist Dhogon Sangda Dorji. A shrine to protector deity Pehar Gyelpo was built upon the ruins.
