Chakar Monastery was established in 1121 in Penyul by Khyungpo Neljor, the originator of the Shangpa Kagyu tradition. According to legend it was one of one hundred and eight monasteries that he founded, although only the names of Chakar and Zhangzhong Dorjeden are known.
