Atsagat Datsan, a Geluk monastery located in the Buryat Repubic of Russia, was founded in 1824 or 1825. At one time, Atsagat had a medical college, library and printery, and a gathering hall. It was visited by Tsar Nicholas II in 1891. Atsagat was destroyed in 1936 and replaced by an orphanage. In 1991, Atsagat was visited by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, who consecrated the site. It was reopened in 1992. A museum celebrating the life of Agvan Dorjiev, the Buryat monk-diplomat and close confidant of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, was opened in 1999. Avgan Dorjiev received his early education at Atsagat, which was near his childhood home.
