The Treasury of Lives

The Rinpung family rose to power and established itself at Samdrubtse (later Shigatse), challenging and then dominating the Pakmodru dynasty, beginning a century of conflict between U and Tsang. The century also saw the emergence of a new order, the Gandenpa, as the disciples of Tsongkhapa called themselves, later known as the Geluk tradition. The great Geluk monasteries of Sera, Drepung and Ganden were founded near Lhasa. The great Bon monastery of Menri was founded in Namling by Nyamme Sherab Gyeltsen. In 1447, Tashilhunpo Monastery was founded by Gendun Drub, posthumously known as the First Dalai Lama.
