The Treasury of Lives

The Seula Jamgon Tulku line, one of the most significant lineages of Bhutan, is based at Seula Chokhor Dorjeden, a Drukpa Kagyu monastery in Bhutan. The First Seula Tulku, Jamgon Ngawang Gyeltsen, was an important religious and politcal figure in 17th-18th century Bhutan.

Jamgon Ngawang Gyeltsen

b.1647 - d.1732

Jamgon Ngawang Gyeltsen was a Bhutanese Drukpa Kagyu lama who served as political ambassador to Ladakh and Derge for the nascent Bhutanese government. Despite suffering significant losses in his family through political intrigue, including the assassinations of his father and brother, he left a legacy not only of diplomacy, but also significant contributions to arts and ritual practice. He became posthumously known as the First Seula Tulku, beginning an important incarnation line in Bhutan.
