The Zhiwatsang family were wealthy descendants of a royal lineage in Nyarong. Lerab Lingpa, also called Terton Sogyel, a prominent Nyingma treasure revealer from Kham who was a teacher to many of the twentieth century's major figures, including the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, came from the Zhiwatsang family.
