Yumbu Lagang is reputed to be the earliest palace in Tibet, with Tibetan historians dating it back to the reign of the semi-mythological ruler Nyatri Tsenpo in the third of second century BCE. Legend has it that the Kāraṇdavyūhasūtra fell onto its roof in the fifth century, initiating the spread of Buddhism in Tibet.
