The Nyo clan held religious and secular influence over the southern stretch of the Tibetan plateau, including parts of Bhutan, for a few centuries, beginning with the Gyaton Aryadeva's (rGya ston A rya de ba) offering of land to Nyo Lotsawa (gNyos lo tsa ba) in the 11th century.
