Menchu was founded by Ngok Lekpai Sherab in the eleventh century in Taktse, near Lhasa. Originally a Kadam hermitage, in the fourteenth century it was the seat of Menchukhawa Lodro Gyeltsen, a close disciple of Dolpopa. It was later converted to the Geluk tradition.
