Drongtse Chode, a Geluk monastery located near Gyantse, was founded in 1442 by Rinchen Gyatso, a student of Khedrubje Gelek Pelzang. Tradition holds that establishment of the institution was in fulfillment of a prophecy of Tsongkhapa. It came to be considered a branch of Tashilhunpo. It once housed colleges for the study of sutra and tantra, however more recently only the assembly hall, reconstructed in the 1980s, is active.
