Chagdud, the seat of the Chagdud Tulku incarnation line, is a Nyingma monastery in Nyarong that was founded in 1431 by the First Chagdud Tulku, Sherab Gyeltsen, who built it on the ruins of a thirteenth-century monastery. According to legend, Sherab Gyeltsen was given jurisdiction over Nyarong from a Ming or Mongolian emperor together with the title Chagdud, meaning "Iron Knot," because of his alleged ability to tie iron bars into knots. Khawa Lungri, an important power-place associated with Padmasambhava, is located above the monastery.
