Tengyeling, the seat of the Demo or Tengyeling incarnation line, was founded by the Sixth Demo Ngawang Jampel Delek Gyatso sometime between 1762 and 1763. It was one of the most important of the regency seats in Lhasa, providing three regents of Tibet. Tengyeling's regency status was stripped in the early twentieth century by the Tibetan government after the Ninth Demo was discovered to have taken part in a plot to kill the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. Closed in 1959, the monastery's compound was converted to housing. In 1983, restoration of the Tseumar Chapel began; it is affiliated with Samye. Historically, Tengyeling also maintained links with Drepung Monastery.
