In 1480 and into 1481, the Rinpung, with Zhamar as their religious leader, waged a military campaign in the Lhasa region in an attempt to counter growing Geluk control there and to respond to the alleged destruction of a Karma Kagyu monastery by Geluk monks from Sera and Drepung.[29] Although they did not capture Lhasa at this time, the show of strength established the Rinpung as the preeminent power in Tsang and U.[30] The Rinpung family allowed the Pakmodru leader Ngagi Wangpo (ngag gi dbang po, 1439–1495) to continue ruling from Neudong Palace (ne'u gdong pho brang) with Rinpung Tsokye Dorje in the position of his senior minister and de facto ruler of Tibet.[31] At the enthronement, Zhamar gave a benedictory address, and, subsequently, he taught several important members of the aristocracy.[32] ...
