The Treasury of Lives

Ngawang Lobzang Tenpa Tsering (kirti 10 ngag dbang blo bzang bstan pa tshe ring) was born in Tsakho Kirtima (tsha kho kirti ma) in 1921. His father was named Tutob Dorje (mthu stobs rdo rje) and his mother was Luwang Kyi (klu dbang skyid). In 1923 the Ninth Paṇchen Lama, Chokyi Nyima (paN chen bla ma 09 chos kyi nyi ma, 1883-1937), and Jigme Damcho Gyatso ('jigs med dam chos rgya mtsho, 1898-1946) identified him as the reincarnation of the Ninth Kirti, Kelzang Lodro Kunga Lungtok Gyatso (skal bzang blo gros kun dga' lung rtogs rgya mtsho, 1905-1920). Three years later, he was enthroned at Taktsang Lhamo Monastery (stag tshang lha mo).

In 1927, a lama named Tardo Gyurme Gyatso (thar 'dod 'gyur med rgya mtsho, d.u.) was appointed as his tutor. He was ordained as a novice by another lama named Jamyang Tubten Gyatso ('jam dbyangs thub bstan rgya mtsho, d.u.).

While still a young man he gave instructions at the tantric college at Gonsar Monastery (dgon gsar) in Ngawa (rnga ba) and advised the leadership there to establish a Kālacakra college. In 1928, he visited Ngawa and Tsakho to preside over ceremonies. After returning from these visits, he resumed his studies.

In 1929 he gave a long-life empowerment to a gathering of people in the region. In 1931, he visited Ganden Lekshe Ling Monastery (dga ldan legs bshad gling) in Ngawa where a grand enthronement ceremony was organized for him.

Jigme Damcho Gyatso was brought to Taktsang Lhamo Monastery specifically to instruct him. In 1932, several bright monks were selected to have dialectical sessions with him.

In 1933, he traveled to Rongwo Monastery (rong bo dgon) in Rebkong (reb kong) where he met the Seventh Rongwo Drubchen, Lobzang Trinle Lungtok Gyatso (rong bo grub chen 07 blo bzang 'phrin las lung rtogs rgya mtsho, 1916-1978). There he received teachings and gave blessings to the public. In 1935, he traveled to Kumbum Monastery (sku 'bum) monastery where he met the Ninth Panchen Lama.

In 1938 he gave empowerment teachings of Avalokiteśvara at Taktsang Lhamo. He was fully ordained in 1940 by Jigme Damcho Gyatso and Tardo Gyurme Gyatso, at the age of twenty. He passed away the following year in 1941.

Thinlay Gyatso is an academic researcher at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Born in Amdo and educated at Labrang and in India, he has published several translations, including An Undercover Journey Through Tibet, by Ajam (from Tibetan to English) and Bertrand Russel's On Education: Especially in Early Childhood (from English to Tibetan).
