In 1900, Ma Tenzin (ma bstan 'dzin) was born in Baza (pa bza') Township, Huzhu Tu Autonomous County in Qinghai Province. 
 
His Chinese surname, Ma 馬, is typical of the Qinghai region, where many families adopted Chinese surnames, often with "kya" or "gya" amended, from the Chinese jia 家, or "family."
