The Treasury of Lives

Namgyel Monastery, which later became the personal monastery of the Dalai Lamas, was founded by the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso in the sixteenth century. Initially the monastic college was based in Drepung Monastery and named Pende Lekshe Ling. After the Fifth Dalai Lama built the Potala Palace, Namgyel Monastery was moved to the Potala in the Western Courtyard known as Deyang Nub. The monastery was entrusted with the responsibility for performing various important prayers and rituals for the welfare and prosperity of the Tibetan Government. Even though the Dalai Lamas are so closely associated with the Geluk school, Namgyel Monastery is nonsectarian and maintains the ritual practices and teachings of all the four main traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery has relocated to Dharamsala, India.
