The Forty-first Ganden Tripa, Lobzang Gyeltsen (dga' ldan khri pa 41 blo bzang rgyal mtshan) was born in Tsetang (rtse thang) in either 1600, the iron-mouse year of the tenth sexagenary cycle, or 1599, the earth-pig year of the tenth sexagenary cycle.

Lobzang Gyeltsen enrolled at Taktsang Rawato (stag tshang ra ba stod) and studied the traditional philosophical texts and Vinaya from the sutra section of the Geluk monastic curriculum. He then matriculated in Gyuto College (rgyud stod grwa tshang) for studies in the advanced topics of tantra. In addition to his religious studies, he also learned subjects such as grammar, poetry, composition and so forth. He completed his studies in both sutra and tantra, and became a noted scholar and teacher.

Following his studies Lobzang Gyeltsen taught at Gyuto College and Shartse College of the Ganden Monastic University, and was appointed abbot of both institutions.

In 1662, the water-tiger year of the eleventh sexagenary cycle, Lobzang Gyeltsen was enthroned to the seat of Forty-first Ganden Tripa. Trichen Lobzang Gyeltsen served the post for about seven years until 1667 or 1668, giving teachings on both sutra and tantra in accordance with the Geluk tradition. He also led the important religious performances and activities, event, and festivals of Geluk tradition, particularly the Monlam Chenmo that was held in Lhasa the first month of every Tibetan year. According to some sources Trichen Lobzang Gyeltsen ascended the throne of Ganden Tripa in 1658 and served for seven years, but these dates are not likely if the previous and subsequent Trichens' tenures are accurate.

Following his retirement from the Golden Throne of Ganden, Trichen Lobzang Gyeltsen, settled at Tsetang and served as patron-lama (zhal 'dzin) at Maldro Rinchenling (mal gro rin chen gling) and some monasteries in Tsetang. He passed into nirvana in 1672, the water-mouse year of the eleventh sexagenary cycle, in Gyalkhang Tse (rgyal khang rtse), at the age of seventy-three.

Samten Chhosphel earned his PhD from CIHTS in India where he served as the head of Publication Dept. for 26 years. He has a Master’s degree in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College, Boston. Currently he is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the City University of New York, and Language Associate in Columbia University, NY.
