Spituk, a Geluk monastery in Leh, Ladakh, was founded in the fifteenth century on the site of an earlier monastery founded in the 11th century. It is considered the first Geluk monastery in Ladakh. According to tradition, a disciple of the Buddha visited the region and prophesied a monastery on the location, which at the time was covered by water.
