Sarnath marks the location of the Buddha's first sermon. It was a flourishing center of multiple traditions of Buddhism as early as the third century CE and remained so until the twelth century. Buddhist institutions were built anew there beginning in the eighteenth century and it continues to be a major Indian Buddhist pilgrimage destination.
