The Treasury of Lives

Nenying is a Geluk monastery just south of Gyantse. It was first established in the eighth century by Samye head Gya Jampel Sangwa, a teacher to emperors Trisong Detsen, Tridesongtsen and Trisukdetsen. Over the centuries it was associated with the Nyingma, Sakya, Shangpa Kagyu,  Bodong, Kadam and Geluk traditions. It became distinguished in the fifteenth century as a vibrant home to well-known painters including Menla Dondrub, who initiated the Menri style. The Eighth Samding Dorje Pakmo was granted Nenying by her paternal uncle, the Sixth Panchen Lama. The Seventh Ganden Tripa Lodro Tenpa received his monastic vows at Nenying.
