The Me'u clan originated from the ministers of Nubyul, the land of the Nub, one of the 12 kingdoms during Tibet's pre-imperial age in what would be the present-day Rinpung area in west-central Tibet. Beginning in the 11th century, the Meu clan would become associated with Bon religion when Meu Gongdzo received instruction from eminent Bonpos of the Shu and Dru families. At that time, the Meu house was located in Nyemo, west of Lhasa. The monastery of Zangri was established there, existing until 1959, and sometime after being reduced to ruins. Though the original is no longer standing, Meu descendents have built a new house and monastery in a nearby valley.
