Lumbini is the birthplace of the Buddha Śākyamuni. It is located in southern Nepal. An Ashokan pillar, dating to the third century BCE, is extant, as are a number of ruins and a tank said to be where the Buddha's mother, Mahāmāyā, bathed before giving birth.
