Karchen is a monastery in Ngawa, Amdo, that was founded in 1340. Although it may have originally been Nyingma, it appears to have been converted to Geluk by the eighteenth century, when the Second Amchok, Konchok Tenpai Gyeltsen, was enthroned there.
