Hemis Monastery was founded in the 11th century in Ladakh. In the 1630s, it was restored by Taktsang Repa Ngawang Gyatso, a key figure in the religious tradition of Ladakh, under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyel. It is a Drukpa Kagyu monastery locate about forty kilometers from Leh.
