Nyarma, a monastic complex located near Thikse in Ladakh, was founded around the year 1000 by Rinchen Zangpo, and under the patronage of the Guge King Lha Lhama Yeshe O. It was the Margyul region's main center of Buddhist activity around the the first millenium, however over time it has suffered due to invasions and exposure to the elements. Recent efforts have been made to reconstruct the large complex, which contains over five temples and dozens of stupas.
