Karchung Monastery was founded by King Tride Songtsen, also known as Senalek, in the early ninth century. He erected an inscribed stone pillar, the Karchung Doring, and stupas in each of the temple's four directions. The ruins of Karchung lay just outside Lhasa city, in Chushul county across the Kyichu river from Drepung Monastery.
