The Treasury of Lives

The Sixth Dorje Drak Rigdzin, Kunzang Gyurme Lhundrub (rdo rje brag rig 'dzin 06 kun bzang 'gyur med lhun grub) was born in the 1770s in a place named Sertok (gser tog), located near the Chakla (lcags la) Kingdom based in Dartsedo (dar rtse mdo) in Kham. According to his hagiography, he began making divinations and revealing sky treasures (dgongs gter nam mkha' mdzod) from a young age, which included a long-life practice called Essence of the Sun  (nyi ma'i snying po). Due to these activities, it is said he was highly honored by the king and subjects of Chakla.

He was identified as the incarnation of the Fifth Dorje Drak Rigdzin, Kelzang Pema Wangchuk (rdo rje brag rig 'dzin 05 skal bzang pad+ma dbang phyug, 1720-1771), and enthroned at Tubten Dorje Drak Evaṁ Chokgar (thub bstan rdo rje brag e vam lchog sgar) in central Tibet.

He is remembered to have developed and maintained the monastery, which had been destroyed by the Dzungar Mongols in 1717 and subsequently rebuilt by his previous incarnation. Kunzang Gyurme Lhundrub gave teachings, commissioned numerous objects of faith, sponsored the printing of scriptures, and emphasized the study of the Jangter and other traditions' texts. His main disciple was named Chuzang Namkha Longyang (chu bzang nam mkha' klong yangs, d.u.).

He passed away at the age of thirty-five. According to his hagiography, at the time of his death an umbrella of rainbow light was seen above his body and a pleasant smell wafted through the area. Although the exact dates are not known, based on the birth year of his successor he most likely passed away at the end of the first decade of the nineteenth century.

Ngawang Jampel (ngag dbang 'jam dpal, c.1810), was identified as his incarnation and was subsequently enthroned as the Seventh Dorje Drak Rigdzin.

Samten Chhosphel earned his PhD from CIHTS in India where he served as the head of Publication Dept. for 26 years. He has a Master’s degree in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College, Boston. Currently he is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the City University of New York, and Language Associate in Columbia University, NY.
