The twelfth century physician, scholar and religious figure Yutok Yonten Gonpo the Younger (g.yu thog gsar ma yon tan mgon po) is often lauded as the "Father of Tibetan medicine." The Tibetan medical tradition often portrays Yutok as an emanation of the Medicine Buddha Bhaiṣajyaguru and as a descendant and reincarnation of Yutok Yonten Gonpo the Elder (g.yu thog rnying ma yon tan mgon po, 708-833), the royal physician of Tri Songdetsen (khri srong lde btsan, 742–797), who, according to legend, synthesized all the medical knowledge available in Tibet in his day. ...
