The Treasury of Lives

Shedrub Gyatso (bshad sgrub rgya mtsho) was born at the beginning of the twentieth century in a place named Peyak Dude (dpe yag 'du sde) in the Drida Zelmogang ('bri zla zal mo sgang) region of Kham. Little information is available about his life.

In his youth he entered Pelyul Monastery (dpal yul dgon) and studied under the guidance of the monastery's eighth throne holder, the Third Karma Kuchen, Orgyen Dongak Chokyi Nyima (karma sku chen o rgyan mdo sngags chos kyi nyi ma, 1854-1906). He appears to have been identified as the reincarnation of Tashi Puntsok (bkra shis phun tshogs), a Pelyul lama who lived in the nineteenth century. He earned the title of Khangnang Dredul (khang nang dre bdul) after meditation experiences of the Eight Heruka, into which he had been initiated at Namdrak Monastery (gnams brag dgon). His reincarnations were subsequently known as the Khangnang Lama.

At behest of the ninth throne holder of Pelyul, the Second Penor Rinpoche, Rigdzin Pelchen Dupa (pad nor 02 rig 'dzin dpal chen 'dus pa, 1887-1932) he assumed the abbacy of the monastic college of Pelyul, Tosam Norbu Lhunpo (thos bsam nor bu lhun po). The date of his service is not known, and he is not counted as an abbot in the monastic history. The Second Penor also appointed him abbot at Gojo Wanak Monastery (go 'jo sba nag).
