The Treasury of Lives



Karma Ngelek Tendzin Trinle Rabgye (karma nges legs bstan 'dzin 'phrin las rab rgyas) was born in 1700, the iron-dragon year of twelfth sexagenary cycle, in Derge (sde dge), Kham (khams). He was the nephew of the Eighth Situ, Chokyi Jungne (si tu 08 chos kyi 'byung gnas, 1699-1774).

As a youth, he started the basic education, Tibetan reading, writing, and daily prayers, eventually matriculated at a monastery, most likely Karma Gon (karma dgon) and later Pelpung (dpal spungs), which his uncle established in 1727. He studied both exoteric and esoteric courses under the guidance of his illustrious uncle, specializing in Tibetan medical science.

He later trained a number of disciples, including Yilhung Jamyang (yid lhung 'jam dbyangs), Chokyi Dorje (chos kyi rdo rje), and Drime Zhingkyong Gonpo (dri med zhing skyong mgon po, 1724-1760). He composed a number of medical treatises.

Sonam Dorje is an independent scholar based in Amdo, he completed his Ph.D. in Dunhuang Tibetan Literature Study at Northwest Minzu University in Lanzhou, China
