The Fifth Drubgyud Tulku was born in 1839 to a father named Titsa Ngwawang Dargye (tis tsha ngag dbang dar rgyas) and a mother named Khyungza Darkyi (khyung bza' dar skyid). His personal name is unrecorded.
Following the death of the Fourth Drubgyud Tulku (sgrub rgyud sprul sku 04, 1739–1828), the Fourteenth Karmapa, Tekchok Dorje (karma pa 14 theg mchog rdo rje, 1798–1868) is said to have predicted the names of his reincarnation's parents and the location of the birth. The Eighth Drukchen, Chokyi Nangwa ('brug chen chos kyi snang ba), identified the child as the reincarnation.
He took monastic ordination from the Ninth Tai Situ, Pema Nyinje Wangpo (ta'i situ 09 pad+ma nyin byed dbang po, 1774–1853) who trained him at Pelpung Monastery (dpal spungs dgong).
He eventually assumed the throne and took responsibility for the population of monks at Tana Monastery (rta rna dgon) in Nangchen, the seat of the Yelpa Kagyu tradition.
He passed away at the age of fifty-four in 1892 or 1893.
