The Treasury of Lives

Dondrub Gyatso (don grub rgya mtsho) was born in 1702, the water-horse year of twelfth sexagenary cycle. His family belonged to the Lingmo (gling mod) clan, which said to have descended from Gesar of Ling (gling ge sar), the legendary epic hero. It said he was a naughty and disobedient child, and was nearly expelled from Labrang Tashikhyil Monastery (bla brang bkra shis 'khyil). It was due to the kindness of his teachers, Jamyang Zhepai Dorje ('jam dbyangs bzhad pa'i rdo rje, 1648-1721/1722) and the First Gungtang, Gendun Puntsok (gung thang 01 dge 'dun phun tshogs, 1648-1724), who had served as the Fiftieth Ganden Tripa, that he was permitted to stay. He did, however, sustain some heavy beatings by the Tsokchen Zhelngo (tshogs chen zhal ngo), the chief monastic proctor.

He eventually devoted himself to his studies and, in 1756, was appointed the tenth throne holder (khri 'dzin) of Labrang.

After he resigned from the throne of Labrang he served as the abbot of the Urge Dratsang, Sangngak Mingye Ling (urge grwa tshang gsang sngags smin rgyas gling), as previous Labrang abbots had also done.

He passed away in 1769, the earth-ox year of the thirteenth sexagenary cycle, at the age of sixty-eight.

Konchok Gyepai Lodro (gling dkon mchog dgyes pa'i blo gros, 1773-1837/1838) was recognized as his incarnation.
