The Third Moktsa Tulku, Jikdrel Tutob Dorje (rmog rtsa 03 'jigs bral mthu stobs rdo rje) was born to the family of Gyiling Tukchok Dorje (gyi ling thugs mchog rdo rje, d.u.) in Golok ('go log), presumably in the first quarter of nineteenth century. One of the sources mentions him as born to a nephew of Gyiling Tukchok Dorje but that is chronologically doubtful. He was said to have experienced a recollection of his past life, and have an immense intellect in learning dharma.
The young boy was identified as the reincarnation of the Second Moktsa Rinpoche, Jikdrel Choying Dorje (rmog rtsa 02, 'jigs bral chos dbyings rdo rje, d.u.). He was presumably enthroned at the seat of his lineage at Katok Dorjeden (kaH thog rdo rje gdan) and educated in the Katok tradition of the time, meaning the lineage of treasure teachings of Rigdzin Dudul Dorje (rig 'dzin bdud 'dul rdo rje, 1615-1672) and Rigdzin Longsel Nyingpo (klong gsal snying po, 1625-1692).
He passed away in his youth; Jikdrel Chokyi Langpo, the Fourth Moktsa (rmog rtsa 04 'jigs bral phyogs kyi glang po), who was born in Lhasa, was identified as his reincarnation.
