The First Dzogchen Khyentse, Guru Tsewang (rdzogs chen mkhyen brtse 01 gu ru tshe dbang) was born in the region of Kongpo in south-eastern Tibet in 1896, the fire-monkey year of the fifteenth sexagenary cycle. The child was identified as the mind-emanation of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo ('jam dbyangs mkhyen brtse'i dbang po, 1820-1892) by the Fifth Dzogchen Drubwang, Tubten Chokyi Dorje (rdzogs chen rin po che 05 thub bstan chos kyi rdo rje, 1872-1935). Alternately he was said to be the body-emanation. Upon the instruction of the Fifth Dzogchen Drubwang, an attendant brought the young incarnation to Dzogchen Monastery Rudam Orgyen Samten Choling (ru dam o rgyan bsam gtan chos gling) together with the young incarnation of Khenpo Pema Vajra, Demchok Dorje (bde mchog rdo rje, b. 1898).
Guru Tsewang was accommodated in the Dzogchen Lamas' Residence (rdzogs chen bla brang) and taken care under the direct supervision of the Fifth Dzogchen. He was educated by a number of distinguished teachers of the monastery, and received extensive teachings from multiple traditions with commentaries, empowerments, instructions, and transmissions from the Fifth Dzogchen.
He passed away around the year 1935, before reaching the age of forty.
Zhonnu Lodro (gzhon nu blo gros) born in 1937 was identified as his reincarnation by Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro ('jam dbyangs mkhyen brtse chos kyi blo gros, 1893-1959).
