Gyelje, a Geluk monastery located west of Lhasa in Nyemo county, may have been founded as a Kadam institution as early as 1054 by Dromtonpa Gyelwa Jungne. For a time it was the largest monastery in Nyemo with over 500 monks. In the 15th century it was reorganized as a Geluk monastery by Tonpa Khetsun Yonten Gyatso. At one time it was the monastery of the Tonmi family.
