Cholung Jangtse was a Jonang monastery that was in existence by at least the middle of the sixteenth century when Kunga Drolchok was abbot there. Tāranātha was brought there to be formally recognized as Kunga Drolchok's reincarnation. One of the largest Jonang monasteries of central Tibet, it was converted to Geluk in the mid-seventeenth century.
