The Druk Gyelse incarnation line began when Gyelse Kunga Gyeltsen was recognized in the 1690s as the reincarnation of Jampel Dorje, the son of Bhutan's founder Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The line has its seat at Punakha Dzong.

Gyelse Kunga Gyeltsen was the reincarnation of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel's son Jampel Dorje. He lived a short life, as did most of his successive incarnations.
