Bodhgaya, one of the most important sites of Buddhist pilgrimage, is revered as the location where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. King Aśoka is credited with constructing the first temple at the location. It is located in the state of Bihar in northern India. The Mahabodhi Temple was granted Unesco World Heritage status in 2002.
