The Dudjom incarnation line is generally said to have begun with the seventeenth-century Katok lama Dudul Dorje, although Orgyen Dudul Rolpatsel is sometimes mentioned as the first of the line. Dudul Dorje’s reincarnation, Dudjom Lingpa, was the progenitor of the Dudjom Tersar, of which his reincarnation, the great twentieth-century lama Dudjom Rinpoche, was the main propagator.

Kharchu Dudjom Ling, a Nyingma monastery in Lhodrak, sits on a site associated with Padmasambhava and numerous other Nyingma saints. It was first developed as a sacred site in the thirteenth century by Melong Dorje and then later founded as a monastery in the sixteenth century by the Fourth Drukchen, Pema Karpo. Under the Fifth Dalai Lama it was expanded and became the seat of the Namkhai Nyingpo incarnations.

Dudjom Gonpa, Orgyan Do-ngak Chokorling, is a Nyingma monastery in Boudha, Nepal. Dudjom Rinpoche built it in the early 1970s and gave the empowerments for the Dudjom Tersar there in 1977-1978. His reliquary is housed there.
