The Treasury of Lives

Hemis Monastery was founded in the 11th century in Ladakh. In the 1630s, it was restored by Taktsang Repa Ngawang Gyatso, a key figure in the religious tradition of Ladakh, under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyel. It's a Drukpa Kagyu monastery, and the largest and richest of the Ladakhi monasteries. Hemis is about forty kilometers from Leh.
